Most of us have heard the saying, “That’s the best thing since sliced bread!” What do you think is actually the best thing since sliced bread?
There are so many things that have followed the genius of sliced bread that it’s really hard to decide what would be worthy of the title “Best.” Considering sliced bread wasn’t invented until 1928, that takes an awful lot of my favorite inventions like refrigeration, air conditioning and the washing machine out of the running for this grand title. It appears sliced bread was actually late to the invention party.

The best invention since sliced bread award goes to the invention that has shown the most creativity and initiative in making our lives more complete, yet complex at the same time. The winner of this award created a buzz that can be heard world-wide. It has had the ability to connect, yet disconnect all of us. Its research leads to questions that can now all be answered by the mastermind…Google. This recipient has been known to cause cancers and heal them with their own advances in medicine, allowing us to live longer in front of its many other devices. Our children have been able to cross continents, without ever leaving the confines of their bedrooms. They are able to use their new-found imaginations, without ever actually having a thought of their own. Your talents enabled us to travel to space and beyond in search of life outside of our own, who we can eventually “friend” on Facebook or “follow” on Twitter. This award goes to the one who has single-handedly become a blessing and a curse in our daily lives.
Technology, please come forward and accept your Best Thing Since Sliced Bread award.

Earlier this week my 17 year old son came to me with a question about the movie Kramer vs. Kramer. Next thing out of his mouth was “what are you doing?” I answered “thinking” he said “I don’t want you to think that will take too long, just Google it.” Be afraid….

I am indeed afraid of the next generations to come with zero personal and social interactive face to face skills. I have a 19 year old daughter so I get it, and I do it too, but I am still thinking about what I think is better than Google. I do not think that the internet has improved the QUALITY of our lives. In some ways it has isolated us. Yet, here I sit writing to you..a conundrum no doubt..

Hence the blessing & curse. For me, texting is the most evil of the technology advances and the leading form of disconnect amongst kids and families today. Very sad.

Oh technology, how I love and hate you at the same time. I don’t think I can breathe without it, not being able to Google something might possibly kill me. But its made work a lot longer, not harder, there’s just so much more work to do

it sure can suck up a lot of time! I can truly distract myself, but on the other hand it is an amazing invention and it is literaly re-wiring how kids learn and how we think… the amount of info we have at our fingertips is mindboggling… it is a blessing, and it is also a curse because it forces us to think faster and faster and react without completely processing what is happening. On the other hand, I like crusty french bread with butter (gobs of it) simply broken off and chewed with dinner maybe even ussd to sop up the sauce…

I agree with you on the Internet being the best thing since sliced bread, but I agree with a lot of others who have commented about the lack of social interaction, etc. When I started going to chat rooms all those many years ago, people knew how to have a conversation still. You could have pleasant and thought-provoking discourse on a variety of subjects; however, now, people don’t seem to have the same capacity for intelligent expression like they once did.

If Google will be an enabler and not a crutch it is very good. If we research and analyze what we find with Google, discounting bad sources of information, and focusing on the good, then it is very powerful in a positive way. If we click on the first thing or something from the first page and take it as gospel, then it can be a very negative thing. If we replace thinking with it, then it will become a curse. Here is a test – how many phone numbers can you remember that you have preprogrammed? Great post, BTG
