Friday Fun Fur

Star of the Blog….CHESTER

Look who is featured here on Fun Fur Friday, Chester my Beagle. Chester is his official name, however it’s been replaced by…Pop, Pudding Pop, Popsicle, Sickle, Sickle Cell Anemia, Buddy, Bud, Friend, Chess, Woo Woo Waa Waa and Little Littles.

Don’t judge I happen to come from a family of name changers, it’s in the genes, it’s what we do. Yes, this includes yours truly a/k/a … Lee Wee.

My mother was calling for me back in the day, but I didn’t want to go in just yet, so I hid behind a car with my friends (giggling). On her 3rd attempt to get my attention, you guessed it …”Leeeeeeeeeeeee Weeeeeeeeee come on honeybun it’s time for bed…Leeeeeeeee Weeeeeeee! (giggling)” Mothers’ always get the last laugh.  It’s all a blur other than crawling home and being dubbed Lee Wee from that point on.

Hater’s gonna hate.
I didn’t ask to be this cute…it just happened.

To your left is Chester’s baby picture. At a mere 9 weeks old he is sitting in a planter we had in the yard. He climbed in there on his own and I was so mad that I didn’t have a little sailor hat…ugh. He was cool with not having the hat, I’m still not.

Simmer down…simmer down. I’m already sitting on the step, because I want to Sit On The Step … Campeche?

To your right is the Toddler stage. The never-ending guessing game. Do you want to sit on the step? Do you want to go in? How about some water? Walk? Do you want to go for a walk? Do you have to go pee? poop?  I still expect answers…I am such an optimist.

Chester’s “CAT” phase ended when his ‘growth spurt” caused him to require assistance getting in the window.

We all love the Teenage stage, what’s not to love. Going through those wonderful experimental stages of wanting to be a Cat, staying up late, sleeping until well after noon and my favorite…defiance or as you like to think…independence.

It wasn’t easy watching you walk without the security of the leash, but we had to let go and trust you wouldn’t run. Not that you would ever leave your food source.

No doubt Chester was up late watching that special on
Animal Planet…AGAIN!

Long gone are the days when we chased after you as you bolted for a rabbit, knowing you never had a chance. Yet we were RUNNING.

We no longer hear you running up and down the steps howling during a good game of hide-n-seek anymore. The days of chasing your orange ball are few and far between. We won’t mention how you somehow muster up the energy of a puppy for any form of food….just sayin.

The only thing missing is the yellow “Crime Scene” tape.

Finding a sunbeam is one of your favorite pastimes. Laying on the step like a rock for hours and scaring the crap out of the neighbors is priceless. Always a character.

Middle age has set in and suddenly you’ve taken on the personality of Walter Matthau in Grumpy Old Men. You still enjoy people and other dogs … from a distance.  You are set in your ways, your schedule is etched in stone and your happiest moments are sitting outback with your human counterpart.

Middle Age at its best..

I’ve come to the conclusion that my parenting and pet raising methods are very similar. I enjoy the security of a leash. Chess is pushing 49 in dog years and I still worry about him running into the street. Honestly, does the word “run” even cross his mind?

The kiddies are growing up, my grip has loosened on the leash and my sense of security has been turned over to…Faith. Hey, I can always step on the leash if I drop it! …. Enjoy the Ride!

  1. Ours is officially a senior citizen. He has his playful moments once a day and then he is done. He walks and will still run off if given the chance, although we know he would collapse for three days if given the chance to run his legs off. Love the post! You have a very cute puppy… and yes, my dog has several names also, I think they need an abundance of names so they know how much we love them… most often ours gets called Mr. Stinky Butt. We like to keep it formal!

    1. Hahahaha….Chester can relate to being down for 3 days after thinking he could catch a ground hog. We had to have the “what were you thinking?” talk. Glad you enjoyed it.

  3. If I were Chester, I would commit hari kari before answering to Little Littles, and don’t even bring up Woo Woo Waa Waa… He looks much to cool for that. I think I would like Chester… and I don’t say that about most dogs. Nice Bio.

Nicknames are fun things, but what do I know… I named my daughters ‘Porky’ and ‘Beansie’. (my wife was not amused)

    1. I know, I know…Chester has so much soul, you can hear it in his bark and yet he is succumbed by Woo woo Waa Waa…it’s most likely the reason he turned into Walter Matthau. As for daughters god bless them..and the wife..hahaha

  4. Oh, Tops, you brought tears to my eyes. Our English Springer Spaniel “puppy,” Cooper is failing. He is over 100 years old (14 in human years) and has, well, seen better days. He is currently consuming more medications than the entire nation of Malawi. So thanks for making me smile, and sigh.

    Chester is wonderful.

  5. Lisa, there is no better family dog than a beagle, such wonderful tempreate and cuteness all wrapped up in one lovable bundle. Chester looks like he’s very much part of your family and engaging in typical beagle-like behaviour – makes me smile all over. Would you believe we lost our beagle last year after a long illness? She was 49 human years young also. This is really uncanny. BTW, I know all about the foodmania, lack of road sense and hound sense of smell {smiles knowingly :)}.

    1. So sorry about your loss. We think Chester has something going on..he seems so slow. He is petrified to go to the Vet, probably because they took his testicles off, now he must be sedated just for a visit. My sister and niece both had Beagles…Beanie & Miles. Beanie passed away at 15 and Miles lives happily in Florida. Very uncanny indeed!

  6. Oh no! I just realized that my dog is middle aged too!
Well that explains the look she gives me when I ask if she wants to go out for a run “Run? What do you mean run? By that I hope you mean nap.”
Chester is so cute! I LOVE the picture of him in that planter!

  7. I have a hard time resisting a good dog story and I love yours. I, too, have found parenting and pet parenting to have some similarities. Thanks for the adorable photos of cute Chester; my young lab, Gus, hates the vet for the same reasons.

  8. What a great dog! That ray of sunlight – I got a cat like that. Funny, I’m a nicknamer. That was my one of my talents growing up and what kept from getting beat up as a kid. Ella our cat goes by numerous names – El, Els, Elly, boog, little boogs, elvus, elenst…

  9. Oh Chester, are you cute. I love beagles, they are such people dogs. When I was a kid we had one in the neighborhood named Baskum Diernfield, who along with his parents were Orthodox. One day coming home from school I found him howling because he had a thorn in his front paw (so biblical, no I didn’t have sheep with me) so I bent down to take it out. After that he refused to leave my side. Mr Diernfield had to keep coming over to get him. It was the sweetest thing. Personally I think our food was better, he preferred Italian to what he got at home, but I haven’t thought of that in a few decades. Please thank Chester for me, in between naps, for that stroll down beagle lane.

    1. Very biblical indeed! Lol!! Of course you won him over with the Italian food, for god sakes these Beagles are so easy. The levels they will go for a good meatball.
I will tell him..that was a great story!
